About Dr. Ming:
Dr. Ming is a board certified behavior analyst with over 20 years experience in the field, having worked with individuals with developmental disabilities and autism and their families in a variety of capacities from direct interventionist to county level quality assurance. Her research and practice focus is on the integration of Skinnerian Verbal Behavior and Relational Frame Theory, and she received her Ph.D. from the National University of Ireland at Galway under the supervision of Dr. Ian Stewart. She teaches and acts as subject matter expert for graduate level classes on Verbal Behavior for The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, and is an associate editor for The Analysis of Verbal Behavior. She has provided training and consultation for agencies and individual consultants using an analysis of verbal behavior approach to programs for children with autism since 1996, and has provided coaching and training on applications of RFT to EIBI programs for nearly a decade. Her clients include consultants and agencies from throughout North America, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, Brazil, Nigeria, and India.
Workshop Summary:
All of us, but perhaps especially parents, struggle with being pulled in many directions and fulfilling multiple roles, and our “to-do” lists can be overwhelming. Two Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) tools can help us parent from a place of grounded, values-based commitment. The Matrix teaches us to sort our behavior into “towards” and “away” moves that help us create the space to make choices that are in line with our values, even when that is difficult. The Mindful Action Plan also helps us make values-based choices and act on them, by combining strategies from ACT with strategies from performance management to help us to focus on being here now, accepting, noticing, and doing what we care about. Both these tools will be presented, with experiential exercises, as ways to improve psychological flexibility and engage in more mindful parenting, especially in those times when parenting is the most difficult job we have.
